Freeman of the Company and much loved Assistant Clerk for 13 years

Sue Cummings, Assistant Clerk to the Cordwainers, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in August and despite intensive treatment, passed away peacefully on 19 October 2022. Sue’s death has left a gaping hole in the hearts of her colleagues and has deeply affected many members of her extended Cordwainer family.

Sue was recruited by John Miller, my predecessor, to be his PA in 2009, but, prior to that she and John had worked together for many years at the Law Society.  As John knew she would, Sue proved to be a huge asset to the Company; she was made Assistant Clerk in 2015 and a Freeman of the Company in 2019.

Sue was enormously proud to be a Cordwainer and her dedication to the Company was total. She had an encyclopaedic knowledge of Cordwainer history, traditions, membership and artefacts and took great delight in the Company’s growing links with the industry and in particular with the success of the Footwear Awards, a success in which she was instrumental. Always helpful and generous with her time and experience, Sue was the kindest, most warm-hearted and thoughtful person I have had the pleasure to know, and with a great sense of humour. She was a true friend to so many of us associated with the Company and we feel her loss profoundly.

The order of service from Sue’s funeral is here.

A short photographic tribute and the eulogy that was read at her funeral service can be found here.
