It’s ‘inspirational Wednesday’, one of our favourite days of the year when we are privileged to see some of the best work by Britain’s student footwear designers.
The Cordwainers National Student Footwear Awards are now in their sixth year and the talent demonstrated by students from the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts, London, De Montfort University and the University of Northampton continues to amaze our judges.
Past judges Liverymen Atalanta Weller and Katie Greenyer, who is Creative Director of Pentland Brands, were joined this year by Freeman Joachim Sedelmeier, Head of Design – Shoes at Paul Smith, and Helen Kirkum, the first Cordwainer Footwear Student Design winner in 2014.
They make up a formidable team and are united by a passionate interest in encouraging young designers. Both Joachim and Helen benefited from Cordwainer awards earlier in their careers. ‘I am really looking forward to seeing how things have moved on’, said Joachim.
The results will be unveiled at the Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Awards Ceremony on 6 June and although we can’t unveil any of the remarkable work yet, Katie offered a spoiler: ‘I can really say that this year has been the highest of standards and toughest year to judge so far. It took us an additional two hours to debate the work, challenge each other and delve deep in to the students’ rationales to justify the winning entries.’
We can’t wait for awards night and extend our thanks to our hard-working judges and to the companies who support the Cordwainers in promoting the best in British footwear design.
