Launched in 2014, the Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Awards are entrenched in the Company’s core purpose: supporting and encouraging young shoemakers and footwear designers.
For hundreds of years apprentices were ‘bound’ to masters for seven years to learn a trade. Today, the Company is the largest private provider of scholarships and bursaries to footwear education in the UK.
It’s something that is really important to us and connects us to our shoemaking roots, which stretch back nearly 750 years.
Britain leads the world in footwear design and for it to maintain that position, we firmly believe that we must encourage and invest in the talents of young people.
We celebrate this every year with the Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Award, which is open to students at the three universities that offer footwear design courses: the universities of De Montfort, Northampton and the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts, London.
The annual Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Award has become our showcase event, an unmissable night for both student designers and industry professionals.
Past winners have gone on to great things: their shoes have been worn by celebrities such as Lady GaGa; they have secured jobs with the best names in footwear design such as Jimmy Choo; and they have established their own businesses.
The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers is proud to play a part in facilitating their success.
