Cordwainers have been supporting and encouraging young shoemakers and footwear designers for nearly 750 years.
For hundreds of years apprentices were ‘bound’ to masters for seven years to learn a trade. Today, the Company is the largest private provider of scholarships and bursaries to footwear education in the UK.
It’s something that is really important to us and connects us to our shoemaking roots.
Britain leads the world in footwear design and for it to maintain that position, we firmly believe that we must encourage and invest in the talents of young people.
We celebrate this every year with the Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Award, which is open to students at the three universities that offer footwear design courses: the universities of De Montfort, Northampton and the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts, London.
Past winners have gone on to great things: their shoes have been worn by celebrities such as Lady GaGa, they have secured jobs with the best names in footwear design such as Jimmy Choo, and they have established their own companies.
So we wish all the 2019 entrants the best of luck and can’t wait to see their designs.
